Practical exercise
Imagine yourself inside or outside of a big building. Scan the place with your senses. Especially with your eyes. Try connecting your surroundings with your imagination. Intertwine these elements to conceive something new, with your presence in the center of it. Now conquer that space.
Inspired by Georges’s Perec novel “Species of spaces and other pieces” this project examines the relationship between perception, imagination and the reality of space. Architectural photographs sourced from a German magazine originating from the 1960s were utilized as foundational elements within each artwork. These images served as the primary stratum, forming the initial layer of the envisioned spatial composition. Then, I added on top of those, different pieces with the aim of engendering distinct spatial configurations within the pre-existing framework. Through this approach, the intention was to imbue the established architectural spaces with novel dimensions and conceptual layers, thereby transforming the original imagery into multifaceted and evocative visual narratives.

“We use our eyes for seeing. Our field of vision reveals a limited space, something vaguely circular, which ends very quickly to left and right, and doesn't extend very far up or down. If we squint, we can manage to see the end of our nose; if we raise our eyes, we can see there's an up, if we lower them, we can see there's a down. If we turn our head in one direction, then in another, we don't even manage to see completely everything there is around us; we have to twist our bodies round to see properly what was behind us. Our gaze travels through space and gives us the illusion of relief and distance. That is how we construct space, with an up and a down, a left and a right, an in front and a behind, a near and a far.”
"Space melts like sand running through one's fingers."
